Using all the Components of the BeST Program
|
| 1. What is the "Virtual Tour"? |
The "Virtual Tour" will guide you through the various parts of the
program. You will get a full overview of BeST Resident and all its components.
It runs for approximately 8 minutes. You can navigate through the "Virtual Tour"
and choose parts of the program you are interested in learning more about. (Click here to view the virtual tour)
|
| 2. What is "Back to Basics"? |
"Back to Basics" is an in-depth reference library that is organized
by system and covers information on the basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology,
and pathology. This section also shows surgical investigations and surgical
techniques.
|
| 3. How often is the program reviewed and updated? |
The program is reviewed and updated every year. The program is
reviewed by an editorial board of surgeons from Harvard Medical School and the Royal
College of Surgeons.
|
| 4. How are Program Directors using BeST Resident? |
Some Program Directors assign modules and case studies on a
regular basis to enhance clinical training. Many Program Directors find it helpful
to assign a case study once a week for residents to work through on their own and
then gather and discuss as a group. Other Program Directors provide BeST Resident
to their residents as an additional, optional resource, such as a textbook.
|
| 5. How does the tracking system (Progress Report) work? |
Select the "Progress Report" button from your Home Page. As an individual
user you can view how much material you have covered as well as your test
scores. As a program director this report is located in the "Knowledge
Reporter" and will show you all your residents’ progress, including the time
they spent on the tutorials and their exam scores. You can view individual
users’ progress and also see a summary of your entire group’s progress.
|
| 6. What is the "Real Deal"? |
The "Real Deal" is a practice ABSITE exam with almost 500 questions
that are randomized when taken. The exam is timed and there is no limit to how many
times you take the exam. The highest score will be posted on your progress
tracking report.

|
| 10. Is there a discount with group or institutional purchases? |
There is an institutional discount for 12-month and 36-month
subscriptions. The discount for the 12-month subscription is based on the number
of residents, minimum of 10. All 36-month subscriptions are discounted.
Please contact elearning@hms.harvard.edu for a discount based on the number
of residents you have or length of subscription. At this time we do not offer
a discount for the 3-month or 6-month subscriptions.
|
| 11. Can I purchase one or a few licenses to be shared with a group? |
No, the licensing agreement stipulates one user per user name
and password. More importantly, having users share passwords prevents each individual
user to track his/her progress as well as the Program Director from being able to track
the progress of individual users.

Technical Questions

to make sure that your screen is refreshing to a new internet page. Follow these steps
below:
Internet Explore 5.x and above:
First select the "Tools" option in the browser’s tool bar and the "Internet Options" from
the drop-down menu. Then select the "General" tab. In the "Temporary Internet Files"
section click the "Settings" button. Select "Every visit to the page" then click

|
| 13. Can I use BeST without being online? |
No, BeST is an interactive surgical training program that gives
the user instant feedback on questions and case studies within the program, as well
as illustrations, animations, simulations and many online resources.
With these goals in mind, we have developed BeST to be delivered exclusively online
(meaning you have to be using the Internet to access the program). There is not the
option of using the program off-line, as you would not have the ability to access all
the content, materials or exam questions and answers.
If you find that you need to review materials while not on the Internet, then you may
print off some of the resources panels found in the "Resource Room" sections.
|
| 14. Do I need to logout of the product once I have finished using BeST? |
BeST is a trackable and timed study tool, therefore users need to
follow guidelines for logging out of the program. When you are ready to end your
BeST study session, you must go back to your Personal Web page and select "Logout"
located on the left-hand side menu bar. This will let the program know that you are
done with your session and track all activity performed during that session.
